Mysteriacs Speak Out About Movie

In an interview with 1UP, Adrian Vanderbosch and Patrick McIntire have further discussed the prospect of a Myst Movie.

In this interview, they said that the animatic trailer they pitched to Cyan should be available from their website in a few weeks.

They also further expressed their enthusiasm for the project, hoping that they could be on set in as early as two years, as well as saying that they were two thirds of the way through writing a script.

Adrian: "There are just so many variables [that] it's hard to predict. What we would like to see? I'd like to be on set in two years. Whether or not that's going to happen is going to depend on what kind of response we get from studios and the development process. It's going to be awhile."

The interview can be read in full at 1UP.com

Rand Miller interviewed about user created content + GameTap

A recent set of interviews conducted with staff at Cyan Worlds have revealed some more information about Cyan's stance on User Created Content.

The interviews, run by Tom Sowa at The Spokesman Review, revealed that Cyan wished to use fan content in some form to sustain Uru's future. However, this was limited by several legal and practical concerns.

It was clarified that Gametap did indeed hold the rights to MO:UL, and, if the situation did not change, would do so for another 2 years.

Ricardo Sanchez at Gametap, in another interview, said that GT and Cyan were currently in negotiations over the game, and that "selling the rights back to Cyan is definitely an option."

The discussion of user created content has been a hot topic in many Uru forums over the past few weeks, a fact which seems to have been a motivation behind these interviews.

Thanks to explorer JWPlatt for the tip-off

Uru mentioned in new book Second Person

Slashdot has a review of the book Second Person: Role-Playing and Story in Games and Playable Media. The review is lengthy but buried in it is this blurb about one chapter:

Celia Pierce and her alter-ego Artmesia discuss(es) social identity and persistence in exploring the case of Uru: Ages Beyond Myst, an MMO that, when it shut down, caused its player base to propagate to other MMOs such as Second Life and There to keep the community alive.

Celia is perhaps better known for her work with Ron Meiners (Randomos) at Virtual Cultures, a blog about online/game cultures.

Second Person book is available at Amazon.com.

Chogon Temporarily Installed as Community Manager

Mark DeForest, aka 'Chogon', has announced that he will, at least for the time being, be taking over community management duties from GreyDragon, who is on vacation.

Chogon, who is also the Chief Technical Officer at Cyan Worlds, has been with the company since early 1995.

In a post on the Myst Online forums, he also addressed the issue of fan-created content, asking explorers to:

"...please respect this forum's policy about not discussing "hacks", "reverse engineering", etc. of Cyan's products"

for the time being. The full post can be found via the 'Read more' link.

Myst Movie Press Release and Request

Patrick & Adrian have released a press release (PDF, HTML) about the MYST Movie project.

In an April 30th blog post, Patrick wrote:

The goal is of course - to get the news out to additional people who might find the project and the blog of interest. Anything to get more public awareness of all that’s going on. If you get the chance to help out, you have our thanks. If you don’t — you still have our thanks. You’re all the greatest.
